Overview:

We’re looking for a Terrain Scientist to join Palmer’s Surficial Geology team. The applicant will support Palmer’s diverse geomorphology, hydrogeological, ecological, and geotechnical teams on a variety of projects that require skills and experience in terrain (surficial geology) analysis based at least in part on the interpretation of aerial photography and other remotely sensed data.

Responsibilities

  • Background literature review of surficial and bedrock geological settings to support terrain inventory, geohazard, and mineral exploration projects
  • Complete preliminary terrain, geohazard or surficial geology mapping based on the interpretation of stereo-aerial photography, satellite imagery and/or topographic data
  • Participate in field programs in diverse and commonly remote settings
  • Contribute to technical reports
  • Support cross-discipline project work

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., physical geography, geology, geomorphology, earth sciences, geological engineering)
  • Experience in terrain analysis and mapping based on interpretation of stereo-aerial photography
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality work within project timelines

Preferred skills/Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years of experience in aerial photography interpretation.
  • Experience with federal and provincial/territorial surficial mapping protocols in Canada
  • Proficiency with GIS and softcopy photo-interpretation software (e.g. ArcGIS; DAT/EM Summit),fieldwork experience
  • Consulting or industry experience
  • Membership, or eligibility for future membership, with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations, analyze soil samples and collect field data in an accurate and well organized manner
  • Traveling to various survey or project sites and obtaining soil samples at various depths using specialized drilling equipment
  • Oversee drilling activities and collecting soil and/or groundwater samples
  • Work on multiple projects, to support execution of scope/budget/schedule to meet client expectations
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with the project team
  • Collaborating with construction staff including structural engineers, architects and landscapers.
  • Conducting field work associated with a wide range of geotechnical projects including, borehole drilling, test pitting, independent field reviews of various stages of civil construction, observing and monitoring work practices on construction and development projects.
  • Technical interpretation of specifications and drawings
  • Filing and management of all project related field notes including some data entry and preparation of field reports
  • Analysis of data and preparation of technical reports, work plans, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate and liaison with contractors, clients and regulators

Skills & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in related engineering field. Registration as CET or EIT in Ontario, or eligibility for registration is required.
  • Relevant coursework or engineering work experience in soil and rock mechanics, site investigation methods and laboratory test procedures
  • Experience conducting materials testing, including compaction testing and geotechnical laboratory testing (grain size analysis, Atterberg limits, unit weight)
  • Knowledge of gINT, AutoCAD, soil analysis software and databases as required
  • Familiarity with total station and RTK GPS survey methods
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with the project team
  • Physical ability to walk over rough terrain, climb ladders and lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

Senior Fisheries Biologist

  • Provide technical leadership for fisheries and aquatic science on a variety of projects in the mining and infrastructure sectors
  • Lead the successful completion of high quality technical reports
  • Advise on study designs and data analysis, including advanced statistical analyses and interpretation of complex data
  • Work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary group

  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, including consulting experience in the BC mining and infrastructure sectors
  • Excellent knowledge of the Fisheries Act and federal/provincial environmental assessment processes
  • Strong experience developing fish habitat offsetting plans
  • Strong experience with in-stream flow modelling
  • Multi-jurisdictional knowledge of environmental regulations, policies, and permit application processes
  • Experience in budgeting and project management
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio) in BC

Intermediate Fisheries Biologist

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree related to fisheries, aquatic, or environmental science
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (experience in consulting an asset)
  • Registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio.) in BC
  • Strong background in fisheries and aquatic science, including familiarity with field sampling and assessment methods for fish, fish habitat (including water and sediment quality), benthic invertebrates, and periphyton
  • Experience with federal, provincial, and territorial environmental legislation, guidelines, and permitting processes
  • Flexibility to travel for fieldwork
  • Ability to manage personal project workload and meet deadlines
  • Strong technical, oral, and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with mine permitting and fish habitat offsetting would be an asset
  • Required certifications: Valid BC driver’s licence and BC electrofishing supervisor certification

Geological / Forestry Field Technician (Entry)

What You’re Responsible For:

  • Participate in, and support the planning of, remote field programs
  • Provide Geological / Forestry field support in remote areas of Canada
  • Safe operation and movement of lightweight drilling equipment for the purposes of collecting sediment/rock samples from depths of up to 10 m, following successful completion of appropriate internal training
  • Complete, document and discuss daily safety inspections and health & safety forms
  • Collect sediment samples using hand tools and lightweight drilling equipment
  • Collect permafrost/ground ice samples using lightweight drilling equipment
  • Support basic line cutting using a chainsaw, axe and other equipment prior to commencement of sampling programs
  • Maintain field equipment and track inventories of expendables and other critical field supplies
  • Support/arrange shipment of equipment to field sites
  • Support office-based data entry, organization and mapping
  • Occasionally support reporting and proposal needs
  • Operating ATVs, UTVs (side-by-side), snowmobiles, 4×4 trucks, etc.

 What We’re Looking For:

 Required:

  • Grade 12 diploma
  • Must have a valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License.
  • Able to participate in multi-week field programs

Preferred:

  • Diploma/certificate in an earth sciences discipline (e.g., geology, forestry, environmental science)
  • Experience and comfort operating and maintaining light equipment (e.g., chainsaws, power tools, light machinery)
