North Saskatchewan River Study

Site-specific municipal wastewater discharge objectives to protect human and aquatic life

The Devon Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) discharges treated wastewater effluent to the North Saskatchewan River. The discharge is regulated through a WWTP license and amendments under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) by Alberta Environment. One condition of the license amendment was the site-specific environmental risk assessment of the North Saskatchewan River.

Palmer Environmental Consulting Group Inc. (PECG) was retained by the Town of Devon to conduct an assessment of the North Saskatchewan River with the objective of determining Effluent Discharge Objectives (EDOs) for the town’s WWTP in order to adequately protect human health and the receiving environment. The objective was met through the completion of Effluent Characterization and Receiving Water Characterization.

PECG collaborated with local field crews near Devon, Alberta and with senior water quality scientists in Ontario to complete the river study.
