Dirk is a terrestrial ecologist and environmental consultant with a broad range of project experience in both the public and private sectors. He provides senior terrestrial ecology expertise to PECG and is the manager of the Bracebridge office in central Ontario. He has completed numerous natural heritage studies for land use planning and development, environmental impact studies, environmental assessments for aggregate resources, roads and utility corridors, and restoration ecology projects. His approach to projects is based on thorough background research, strong field ecology skills and data analysis, and solid knowledge of the current science, environmental policies and natural heritage planning. Through his collaborative approach and understanding of the environmental regulatory process he has worked successfully with agencies on behalf of clients in obtaining project permits and approvals.
Dirk provides expertise in the characterization and assessment of terrestrial ecosystems and species at risk assessments. He is highly proficient in conducting vegetation inventories, wetland assessments, habitat characterization and associated analysis of environmental significance/sensitivity for the identification of landscape-level and site-specific environmental constraints and opportunities.
Dirk has provided expert testimony at the Ontario Municipal Board for a number of projects, providing evidence on the features, functions and impacts to wetlands, significant woodlands and habitat for rare species. He has been an instructor for the Ecological Land Classification (ELC) System for Southern Ontario for the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Dirk enjoys the outdoors with his wife and two boys on canoe trips, skiing and hiking.
